Looking Ahead: Chargers Playoff Picture

After starting the season 2-2, the Chargers have lost five of their last eight games and are now fighting an uphill battle in terms of the Chargers' playoff picture.  At 5-7, the Chargers are two games back of the final Wild Card spot which currently belongs to the Cleveland Browns.

Will the Chargers Make the Playoffs?

If the playoffs were to start today, the Chargers would be the No. 12 seed in the AFC Playoff picture and would not be in the playoffs. Making matters more difficult is the fact that the Chargers do not have a favorable remaining schedule, as four of their final five games are against teams with .500 records or better. This included two matchups against the Broncos, who are currently ahead of them in the AFC playoff race, and the Buffalo Bills who are also fighting for their playoff lives.

How Can the Chargers Make the Playoffs?

While it's too early to lay out exact scenarios at this time, the Chargers' playoff hopes start with the team rattling off wins and reversing their current losing trend. While the AFC West crown is likely out of reach, the Chargers can make up ground on the Raiders and Broncos as three of their final six games are against those two teams. Week 18 features another divisional matchup against the Chiefs and if their playoff seeding is already decided by that point, the Chargers could have an easier game if the Chiefs decide to rest starters.

How Many Super Bowls Have the Chargers Won?

The Los Angeles Chargers have never won the Super Bowl. The team has been to one Super Bowl in their franchise's history, losing to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX (1995).

How Many Times Have the Chargers Made the Super Bowl?

The Chargers have appeared in 1 Super Bowl, Super Bowl XXIX where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26 at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida.

Los Angeles Chargers Playoff Prediction

In order for the Chargers to make the playoffs, they are going to have to win at least three of their final five games. Additionally, they will need the teams ahead of them to falter down the stretch as there are four teams ahead of them for the final AFC Wild Card spot.

At this point, it feels that the key injuries the Chargers have suffered will be too much to overcome. With Mike Williams, Joshua Palmer, and Joey Bosa all on injured reserve, this team isn't deep enough to put up a legitimate fight, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I believe the Chargers will miss the postseason for the fourth time in their last five seasons and will likely be one of the teams looking for a new coaching staff this offseason.
