Bundles of Stress: California Has Most Stressed-Out Locals

Early April marks the start of something that we all need to be cognizant of: National Stress Awareness Month.

BetCalifornia.com covers the ongoing push to activate California sports betting, but we also write about other topics that could affect lives. We turned to Google Trends for a state-by-state survey of who’s seeking the phrase “stress reducing” in their internet searches. Then we made a list of the top 10 states looking for this topic, declaring them the most stressed out. We also determined the five least stressed-out states.

Our research was pulled from Feb. 25 to March 25, 2024. Here are the results:

Based on our research, Mississippi has the most stressed-out residents with a search interest score of 100. From there, there is a steep drop to No. 2 Virginia at 38. New Jersey (26), Delaware (16) and Texas (16) round out the top five.

California (13) leads the second half of the top 10 at No. 6, followed by Florida (12), North Dakota (11), Alaska (10) and Wisconsin (8).

With close to 40 million people in the state, the Golden State experiences stresses that many other states have: Work, money, family and health. But in the state with the most people, those matters and worries can rise higher.

From long work commutes to high taxes and affordable housing, California worries about a lot and rightfully so. There are no legal California sportsbook apps and the effort to make them happen has caused stress for some lawmakers.

The Most Chill States

Based on our research, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota all had a remarkable search interest of 0. Nada, nothing. Just experiencing life to the fullest and doing what they must do in their daily routine of life, work and activity. Massachusetts rounded out the top five with a search interest score of 3.
